The workshop is also open to anyone who might be interested in learning about new teaching techniques and in making connections with other math educators. You do not have to be a Metro NExT Fellow to attend.

The workshop is sponsored and organized by the Metro NY Section of the MAA and hosted via Zoom. There is no fee to attend the workshop. Please register here!

Schedule

10:00AM

Lightning Talks

11:00AM

Teaching Ethics and/or Social Justice in Mathematics.
Dr. Allison Miller, Swarthmore College

This talk comes out of my experience teaching "Ethics in Mathematics" (Rice University, Spring 2021) and "Mathematics and Social Justice" (Swarthmore College, Spring 2022, 2024), both of which dealt with human aspects and impacts of mathematical practices in somewhat different ways. I will describe key content and "big questions" and lay out some considerations for those interested in developing similar courses, leaving plenty of time for questions and discussion.

Short Bio
Dr. Allison Miller is an assistant professor of mathematics at Swarthmore College. In addition to teaching a variety of courses and maintaining an interest in math education, she does research in low-dimensional topology, exploring what knots and surfaces can tell us about the strange world of 4-dimensional topology.

12:00PM

Roundtable Discussion on Rigor, Accessibility, and the Retention Puzzle

1:00PM
