The Workshop
The Metro NExT Workshop is a mathematics pedagogy and professional development workshop that is open for all graduate students, postdocs, and early-career mathematicians in the NYC metro area.
The workshop is also open to anyone who might be interested in learning about new teaching techniques and in making connections with other math educators.
The workshop is sponsored and organized by the Metro NY Section of the MAA and hosted via Zoom. There is no fee to attend the workshop. Please register here!

TBD Short Bio Benjamin Gaines is Associate Professor and Chair of Mathematics and Physics at Iona University. He is also Treasurer of the MAA Metro NY Section, and the recipient of Iona’s 2022 Brother Arthur A. Loftus Outstanding Student Research Award, and the MAA Metro NY Section’s 2024 Distinguished Teaching Award. His primary research interests include combinatorial games and math education, particularly on questions involving writing in mathematics. In addition to teaching courses throughout the math curriculum, from Mathematical Thinking to Abstract Algebra, he greatly enjoys working with students on research questions in games and statistical data analysis. He is very interested in helping learners of all levels overcome the perception that they are “not math people”. |

TBD Short Bio Mercedes Franco is a Professor in the Department of Mathematics & Computer Science at Queensborough Community College (CUNY) and Co-Director of the Center for Undergraduate Research in Mathematics (CURM). She has a M.S. and a Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics from Cornell University and a B.S. in Mathematics from Universidad del Valle (Colombia). In 2014-2016, she served as (founding) campus director of the CUNY Research Scholars Program, a university-wide program that funds year-long, laboratory-based STEM research experiences for associate degree students. As an UR practitioner, she has mentored students from 2- and 4-year colleges/universities in summer and academic-year research using the apprenticeship and research-in-the-classroom models. |
